"In 2017, as a part of a comprehensive approach to keep communities safe in extreme heat, the City launched the Cool Neighborhoods NYC initiative. Every year, hot summers cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat-stroke. These are all outcomes that disproportionately impact older adults and vulnerable populations. Extreme heat kills more New Yorkers than any other extreme weather event and leads to an average of 450 heat-related emergency department visits per year". New York Emergency Management
